Gary Cohn, AIA, and Christy Kim, AIA, CASp, from Marx|Okubo's Irvine office spoke recently at the 2013 Pacific Oil Conference in Los Angeles.
The presentation, called "Protect, Abide, and Provide" outlined the responsibilities that gas station operators face related to complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Knowing the regulations, typical complaints, and costs to mitigate is important because gas stations are frequent targets for accessibility lawsuits.
Among the issues Mr. Cohn and Ms. Kim described in detail were the following steps for reducing exposure to legal action:
- Be proactive in addressing compliance
- Evaluate access at your facility
- Train your staff in accessibility requirements
- Think about the ADA when planning renovations or new construction
- Consult a Certified Access Specialist if you have a question
The annual Pacific Oil Conference is the learning and networking event for independent petroleum marketers and convenience store retailers throughout the western United States. Check out their website here.
