Marko Schotanus, PE, SE, PhD, LEED AP BD+C

Senior Associate, Co-director of Structural Engineering

San Francisco

Marko, Senior Associate and Co-director of Structural Engineering in the West region, analyzes structural and seismic issues required for property condition assessments, seismic risk analysis and pre-construction drawing reviews.

Marko has been practicing structural engineering in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2006, with a primary focus on seismic evaluation and retrofit of existing buildings. Having led interdisciplinary teams in design and construction administration of seismic retrofit projects, he has an in-depth understanding of the design and construction process and is a strong team player on any project.

As an expert in advanced analysis of reinforced concrete structures, Marko has been an active partner in national and international research programs that involved full-scale testing of reinforced concrete frame and wall structures. He has contributed this knowledge to several seismic peer review projects of high-rise concrete wall structures in Seattle, San Francisco and Sacramento, as well as to many performance-based seismic evaluation and retrofit projects.

Marko holds a doctorate in earthquake engineering from the University of Pavia, Italy and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. He is a licensed structural engineer in California and a LEED Accredited Professional. In addition, Marko is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Structural Engineers Association of California, and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. He currently serves on ASCE’s Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings Standards Committee, as well as the Existing Buildings Subcommittee of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations.
